DSM-5 Changes and Clinical Implications with Borderline Personality Disorder or Narcissistic Personality Disorder

About the Speaker:
Dr. Jones is a native Texan, raised in Corpus Christi and San Antonio. She obtained her MSW in 1978 from the University of Chicago. After practicing in Chicago for 15 years, she returned to San Antonio in 1995 where she had a private practice and worked in the hospice field. She began teaching at Texas State University School of Social Work in 2001. She has many years of experience diagnosing and treating clients with BPD and NPD, has taught Diagnostic Assessment for 10 years to MSW students, and has recently adapted the course for use of the DSM-5.

Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:

•   Describe the changes in the diagnostic process using DSM-5

•   Review and apply DSM-5 criteria for personality disorders to a case scenario

•   Examine theories of etiology of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and their application to clinical social work practice

•   Discuss and apply methods of effectively managing practice challenges such as
chronic self-destructive patterns, dependency/mirroring issues, and division among treatment team members

•   Discuss the ethical issues related to common countertransference responses to work with clients with BPD or NPD

•   Develop/refine methods for managing countertransference responses to clients with BPD and NPD using case scenarios
